Community Language Learning

Is a language teaching method which involves psychological aspect and students work together to develop what skill of a language they would like to learn. This method firstly developed by Charles A. Curran and his association which is called Counseling-Learning theory.

Community is important for learning a language because it makes it far more likely that students will be able to immerse themselves in the learning process. Immersion has been recognised to be one of the very best ways to learn a language.

Typical features of a CLL lesson:
  • target language/mother tongue.
  • teacher/learner-centred.
  • counselling role for teacher; client roles for learners.
  • in-a-circle seating for learners.
  • recorder inside circle and teacher outside.
  • TL dialogue generated learner by learner (helped as necessary by teacher)

Total Physical Response (TPR)

It is simply a method through physical activity.

Based on the teaching of its creator, James Asher, the more often the memory connection is made, the stronger the memory association will be and the more likely it will be remembered.

Advantage and disadvantage 😱

If there is a doubt, here is the link where TPR is explained in a better and more understandable way.

The Direct Method.

 The Direct Method

A direct method of teaching, also known as the natural method, is rarely used for foreign language teaching.

It was established in Germany and France in 1900 and differs from the grammatical translation method and traditional approaches.

It is important to know that the basic idea of the direct method was to have more oral interaction, to make spontaneous use of the language, without translation of the first and second language, with or without any analysis of grammatical rules.

The direct method is on target, it is used or can be used in everyday situations, as it is very effective in creating fluent speakers of the language.
This direct method effectively helps the learner not only by asking him/her to do a translation, but can also ask him/her to complete sentences or read literary works.

The audio-lingual method

(A.K.A. The Army Method)

The Audio-Lingual method of teaching had its origins during World War II when it became know as the Army Method, emphasizes the teaching of listening and speaking before reading and writing .

This method is currently in use, lessons on an individual basis rather than as the basis of the course.

Some techniques that can be applied with the Audio-Lingual method are:
  • REPETITION DRILL. Students should repeat what the teacher is explaining quickly and effectively.
  • SUBSITITUTION DRILL. Students should repeat the dialogue that the teacher has assigned, substituting the sign on the line in its proper place.
  • QUESTION-AND-ANSWER DRILL. Students will be subjected to a question and answer either by the teacher asking them questions, or by asking them to ask questions of their classmates.
  • TRANSFORMATION DRILL. Students will be able to change sentences either from affirmative to negative or vice versa.

The silent way

Was founded in the early 1970s by the Egyptian mathematician and educator Caleb Gattegno. It is based on the idea that language learning can be enhanced in three main ways: discovery rather than teaching; problem-solving in the target language; the use of physical tools.

ALSO...

EXAMPLE:

This day the teacher Orlando, made us practice this method, it was really an easy method to apply and understand.

Hey! Let's do this exercise together guys!

The grammar translation method.

The method requires students to translate whole texts word by word and memorize numerous grammatical rules and exceptions as well as enormous vocabulary lists
It was called Classical Method since it was first used in the teaching of the classical languages. The grammar translation method is a foreign language teaching method derived from the classical method of teaching Greek and Latin.

CHARACTERISTICS
  • Students are taught to translate from one language to another.
  • They translate readings in the target language about some aspect of the culture of the foreign language community.
  • Students study grammar deductively, they have to memorize.
  • Students learn grammatical paradigms such as verb conjugations.
  • Students memorize native language equivalents for foreign language vocabulary words.
